I think Mikel did a great job on his demo, introducing us to character relationship mapping. He explained how he has students use this to write collaboratively. I think this is a great idea to get started with creative writing. But I also wondered if I could use this concept in a different way in my classroom.
My students might be able to use this as an organizer for making sense of something we are already reading. It would assess their understanding of what they know about the characters and their relationships. This could be done individually or in groups. Specifically, I'm thinking of having my freshmen do this while reading Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. And by the way, if you have not yet read this YA gem, you should!
